Some would call it a Christmas movie, but I think it’s best enjoyed during the month of February: such a short month yet so many holidays! In honor of Presidents’ Day, I just couldn’t resist sharing a little Style File from a favorite of ours: 1942’s Holiday Inn. How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Do you go all out, or do you keep it simple like us? It gives us the chance to buy each other thoughtful, yet inexpensive, gifts. We take special nights out regularly, no need to overpay just because of the calendar.Īs for gifts, we go to the dollar store together and each spend $5 on each other. ![]() Rather than paying for an overpriced Valentine’s Day menu at a restaurant, we cook a favorite meal at home. A kind word can be so much more valuable than any other gift. Every February we put them out in the foyer, and all month long we write little notes to each other. What started one year in response to a tight budget has become a favorite for us every year. Valentine’s Day, however, we celebrate in a little different way. Hannah’s birthday is more like birth-month, Christmas practically starts in July, and Fall itself is the biggest holiday of all. “Maybe there aren’t any good kids,” Clay tells his mom.We do celebration a little different in our home. His mom is a druggie with revolving-door boyfriends who abuse her and Justin. We find out that Justin is from a broken home. So we know that Sherry’s involvement will soon be revealed. She doesn’t want him to hear what’s on the tapes, so she’s trying to get him to pass them on without listening. Sherry thinks he doesn’t want to be with her because of the tapes. But Clay can’t get his head straight and he stops. Soon Clay invites Sherry to study at his house.Ĭlay is trying to take his mind off the tapes and kisses Sherry. Sky the emo barista who obviously used to be friends with Clay - teases him about hanging out with a girl like Sherry (cheerleader that really isn’t his type). Clay helps her with a school paper and they meet at the coffee shop. And this does absolutely nothing for Alex’s self-esteem. He has a cop father who is all for fighting when necessary and who has possibly raised Alex to think he could be “above the law” in a sense. This gives us insight into Alex’s state of mind. Later in the episode, we see Alex’s dad telling him he’s proud of him. He doesn’t want anyone asking Alex any questions that may lead to him talking about the tapes. Alex was pretty clearly at fault, but Marcus is on the Honor Board and he makes sure Alex gets off. But because the fight was technically just off school property, the school lets the “Honor Board” settle the disputes and make a judgment. But instead of wanting to find justice like Clay, Alex seems to want to punish himself. Of all the kids involved in the tapes, Alex seems to be the most guilt-ridden. Clay was skeptical, but went along with Jeff’s advice, even though he wasn’t answering honestly. As he answered the questionnaire, his friend Jeff coached him on how to answer to get the “right” match. ![]() She thinks she’ll be alone for the rest of her life.Ĭlay remembers the Oh My Dollar Valentine and that he hoped to get Hannah on his list. Hannah is humiliated and sits, frozen and crying, at the booth for some time. Marcus tells her “I thought you were easy.”Īnd here we are with Marcus, reason number six. She pushes him away – with the basketball team watching nearby. ![]() But soon he is sitting on her side of the booth, putting his hand up her dress. He finally shows up with all his teammates. Marcus is hours late for his date with Hannah at the diner on Valentine’s Day. Marcus gets Hannah on his list and he asks her out. In Hannah’s narrative, it’s Valentine’s Day and Liberty High School is abuzz with the “Oh My Dollar Valentine” in episode 6 of 13 Reasons Why. Kids answer a questionnaire and get matched up with another student at the school.
