![]() ![]() Against this cinematic behemoth that pushed the boundaries in terms of visual effects and fictional world building, a movie based on a much-loved 1990s TV show couldn't hope to compete at the box office. The major issue facing Nemesis over Christmas 2003 was the release of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. While there are serious failures with Star Trek: Nemesis, the poor box office can't be blamed entirely on the paper-thin plot and sub-par homage to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Ultimately, the worldwide gross of Star Trek: Nemesis just took it over the line into profit, with $67.3 million, but it was clear that the franchise was no longer a Hollywood money spinner. It didn't get any better for Nemesis, which only grossed $45 million at the end of its theatrical window. For context, this was less than a third of Nemesis' $60 million budget, which was a bad sign for the movie's chances of making a profit. Released over the holiday season in 2003, Nemesis had a very poor opening weekend gross domestically, earning just over $18.5 million at the box office. Star Trek: Nemesis is the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise, which is why it was deemed to have "killed" Star Trek. It's an impressive feat for the TNG crew to come that close to The Voyage Home's incredible box office figures, not least because a TNG movie is also the lowest-grossing Star Trek movie of all time. For reference, the highest performing movie for the Star Trek: The Original Series crew after Voyage Home is Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which grossed $82.2 million. Star Trek: First Contactgrossed over $92 million dollars, which is only $17 million behind The Voyage Home. Interestingly, the highest grossing Star Trek: The Next Generation movie also concerns the crew of the USS Enterprise traveling back in time. This makes the movie the most popular Star Trek film until the J.J Abrams movies began in 2009, and its release during the holiday season of 1986 worked in its favor. The Voyage Home grossed $109.7 million on release, according to Box Office Mojo, which adjusts for inflation. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a perfect fish-out-of-water comedy about futuristic space travelers in the 1980s that just so happens to be an ecological parable. Abrams is also the Trek movie that has the broadest appeal. It's hardly surprising that the highest-grossing Star Trek movie before J.J. It's interesting to ponder why exactly Into Darkness performed better globally, but perhaps it was the involvement of Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch that increased its broader box office appeal internationally, particularly in the UK. Star Trek Into Darkness grossed $467.3 million worldwide, compared to Star Trek's $385.6 million. While Star Trek (2009) is the highest-grossing Star Trek movie domestically, Star Trek Into Darknessperformed better worldwide. ![]() ![]() Opening in theaters on May 8, 2009, Star Trek had a domestic opening weekend gross of $75.2 million which was over half the movie's budget, building to a lifetime domestic gross of $257.7 million. The movie was heavily promoted, and the marketing paid off with the most impressive domestic box office numbers for any Star Trek movie before or since. Abrams' movie was exceptionally cast, with Chris Pine and Karl Urban being particular standouts as both Captain James T. Star Trek (2009) rebooted the franchise by recasting the characters from Star Trek: The Original Series and establishing a completely new universe in the process. ![]() Domestically speaking, the highest-grossing Star Trek movie of all time was the eponymous 2009 reboot, directed by J.J. ![]()
